Ok, I went to the luker to see the new releases and I saw this title ‘Le Portrait de Petit Cossette’. I don’t how it works to put somthing on the list (if the guy who put it there have to rewrite the title or if you do it and he just put the file on the list) but the title’s spelling is wrong. Cossette is a girl so you must put an ‘e’ at the end of ‘petit’ (petite) because in French we need to give the same feminine/masculine to the adjective that the one the name has. Petit is for guys. And second thing, you need an article before the ‘petite’. You must put ‘la’.. If you had said only ‘le portrait de cossette’ you would not have needed the article but because there is the adjective ‘petite’ you need it. So the title should be ‘Le portrait de la petite Cossette’ (in french we don’t use the capitals for all the words in a title).
I’m sorry for bothering you with this.. I don’t know, maybe you did it on purpose but then again maybe not and I thought that if it was the case, you’d like to know^^v
And just so you don’t think that I’m not talking about something I know: I’m from Québec and we speak french there!
If it is possible, i’d like to have a reply just to know what happened with this title..
And if you have other problems with french parts, I’d be pleased to help you since I’m a translator too (from english to french tho.. because as you can see, my english writing skills are not the best XD)

I’m not from this website but I think I can help you. You’re right about the errors of the title, it should be petite instead of petit but the staff get it right. I fact the japanese title was “Le Portrait de Petit Cossette” so the mistake isn’t a “real” one. I think that even if you can not say that in french, it is best to respect the original title and not correct it…
Well I hope I’ve answered your question. And since Im french, I’m afraid my english is very poor so please don’t pay attention to it!

What Nao said is correct we spelled it the the same way the publisher spelled it.

ok then! but just so you know, in translation we tend to correct mistakes found in the original text if there are no reasons for them. So if you were a translation team who would publish the books, you’d have to contact the original publisher to ask if it was beliberate. If they had not realized they had make mistakes, you’d have to correct it. And frankly here, my guess is that the japanese - who find western languages exotics - did not really ask around to know if it was all right or not..
I don’t want to be mean but I know that other translators I know would laugh at you for making such a basic mistake.. But, yeah, there are also transkators who would say like nao ‘we respected the original’ which is an other point of view. I’d say that since the 17th century, there were times that the correction would have been better because then you respect the language and at other times, you would have let it like that because then you respect the original text and show that it is ‘exotic’. But right now, in Canada at least, we tend to respect the idiomaticity of the language.
Ok, now that i’ve explain my point of view, I won’t be bothering you anymore^^v
